Growing up, I was the catalyst in my family when it came to fishing. My father took us on occasion, but isn’t an avid angler himself. I fell in love with it immediately, and since the first fishing experience, I was always the one to push for family fishing trips. My brothers and I were very competitive growing up, in sports and especially when it came to fishing. We had fishing competitions to see who could catch the most fish, and also who could catch the biggest fish. Those fishing games continue to this day, often with bragging rights and paid meals on the line.

The Situation

Not everyone gets as excited about fishing as I do. I realize that it is a hobby that isn’t for everybody, but I was devastated when my son of 6 years told me he didn’t like fishing. I had taken him quite a bit since he was able to walk, and he always seemed to like spending time in the outdoors. But the hobby just didn’t stick like it stuck for me. I realized that he would like different thing than me, and grew to be ok with it. You could say that maybe fishing skips a generation.

For his 8th birthday, we got him a Nintendo Wii with some family games for us to play together. I didn’t realize it, but one of the games that came in the package was a fishing game. One day when I came home from work, I saw my son playing one of those fishing games for Wii. He even had a controller shaped like a fishing pole! I snuck in the family room and watched him for a few minutes. He was casting the right way, and reeling in the line like a fisherman would do it. His face lit up when he caught a fish, and I realized that maybe through this fishing game he would come around to enjoy fishing.
