Free Fishing Lures – Wait, Free?

Any time there is something for free, it always tends to peak a little interest, but a lot of skepticism. Advertisers have cried wolf one too many times, and there always seems to be a ‘cost’ that they failed to mention. Do a search for just about anything free on the web, and there will be hundreds of websites that are trying to scam and sucker you out of either your personal information or your money. So, whenever you see a website advertising anything for free, you should always proceed with caution. The same is true for free fishing lures.

But when it comes to getting free fishing lures online, there are sites out there that genuinely give out lures for no cost. How can that be? It is really very simple. There are advertisers and fishing gear companies that want to get the word out on their new lures and other products. What they do is contact a site and work out an agreement. These websites allow anglers to register, and advertisers send them lures to test. As the angler, it is then your job to use the lure and provide an honest review of the item. Then more advertisers send you more lures, and you test and review them. And so on. Be careful of giving out your information on some of these sites. You never know what they might do with it. Also, remember that you aren’t getting these lures for nothing – you are required to provide an honest review of them. But hey, if you get out and fish, that won’t be a problem.

Free Fishing Lures From A Fishing Club

NAFC LogoThere are other ways on how to get free fishing lures. First, join a fishing club. Some will have free gear giveaways and gear testing opportunities. I am actually a life member of the North American Fishing Club, or NAFC for short. For a low anual fee, or by signing up as a life member, members are entitled to a trove of benefits, ranging from a magazine subscription to discounts on fishing trips. My favorite benefit is the opportunity to field test new fishing gear each month. What happens is you fill out a survey listing your fishing preferences, and they match you to new fishing gear to be tested. Most of the time, I get free fishing lures or other small tackle items to test. But every once in a while, there will be larger, big ticket items. They are all free! But, like stated above, they do require an honest review, and the feedback from an experienced angler is very valuable to a fishing gear company.

Update: The North American Fishing Club now does their field testing through a site called StuffStuff.com. You actually choose the items that you would like to test, and based on availability, you get what you want. It is a pretty nice system, and makes it easy to upload reviews, photos, videos, and feedback right to the site. My review of Seaguar’s Kanzen braided fishing line was done via StuffStuff. Fishing Expos And Conventions

Fishing expos are other ways to get free fishing lures samples. A lot of times there are door prizes and giveaways at these events. If you are really desperate, you could always go to your fishing spots when the water is low (in the winter) and scavenge lures that were snags. If you can’t find anywhere to get free lures, you can at least get a free fishing lures catalog, and browse for the best deals.

Be wary of anything given away for free these days, especially online. But the ideas listed above will help you get some free fishing gear for your next fishing trip. Happy fishing!
