Shimano Spirex – Quality Spinning Reel At Under $50

I have long been a fan of Shimano fishing reels.  Not only are they affordable, but they are made really well.  I have never had any problems with my Shimano reels, and I’ve owned a few for at least 15 years.  They work in just about any situation I may be in, whether it is bream fishing, crappie fishing, trout fishing, or largemouth bass fishing.  When the Shimano Spirex fishing reel line came out, I was pretty excited.  The price was right, and I was in need of a new spinning reel for a new rod I had recently bought.  I wasn’t surprised to see that the reel is built like a tank and performs flawlessly in every situation I have been in.  I recently purchased another Shimano Spirex reel, this time the 4000FG model.  Here are a few highlights of this reel, taken from the Shimano technical features sheet:

Shimano Spirex Spinning Reel Features

  • Propulsion Line Management System: Propulsion Spool Lip, Power Roller III, S-Arm Cam
  • QuickFire II One-Handed Casting System
  • Varispeed Oscillation
  • 5 Shielded Stainless Steel Ball Bearings
  • Lightweight Graphite Frame, Sideplate & Rotor
  • Cold Forged Aluminum Spool
  • S-Concept: S-Guard, S-Arm Cam
  • Ported Handle Shank
  • Rubber Handle Grips
  • Fluidrive II
  • Dyna-Balance
  • Repairable Clicker
  • Approved for use in Saltwater

The 4000FG that I purchased has a gear ratio of 5.7:1, making it a fast retriever (33 inches of line per revolution).  It is a little bit heavier than the 1000FG that I previously bought, but still a light 13.9 ounces.  The 5 stainless steel ball bearings make for a smooth retrieval and drag system.  The Shimano Spirex spool is capable of handling up to 240 yards of 8 pound test line, which is decent, and plenty for my application.

Shimano Spirex Thoughts And Review

The price is what really blows this reel out of the water.  For $50, you really can’t go wrong.  There are similarly priced models from other companies, but I have to say that the quality of this Shimano Spirex spinning reel is heads above the competition.  Did I mention it is only $50?  Read another Shimano Spirex review or two if you are not satisfied with this one.  I am very happy with the two Shimano Spirex combo reels that I own, and would put them up against any other similarly priced reel any day.  Click the image above or here to buy one today!
