Pen Fishing Rod – Ultralight Backcountry Fishing

When it comes to backcountry fishing, size and weight constraints become ultra-important. Many times, getting away from the crowds of popular fishing holes is why many anglers seek refuge in the backcountry. While the beauty of remote fishing locations can make grueling hikes and treks worth it, it is important to plan and pack accordingly. This is where a portable, lightweight fishing rig comes in, and a pen fishing rod is an ideal choice.

Backcountry Fishing

Considering fishing equipment for the backcountry is one of the most important planning items for any remote fishing trip. Whether you plan on hiking, horseback riding, biking, driving, boating, or flying into the fishing location, you will need to know how much weight and bulk you can accommodate. Because fishing gear can vary from tackle boxes and waders to fishing poles and reels, sizes and weights may vary. Telescoping fishing rod kits, the kind that collapses, are ideal for hiking trips to a fishing location. That is where a pen fishing rod comes in. A pen fishing rod is a collapsible fishing rod that starts out the size of an over-sized pen, but then expands out to the size of a small fishing rod. Add to it an ultralight spinning reel, some line and a small tackle box of spinners, and you are ready to fish, no matter the location.

Travel Fishing Rods – Portability Is Important

As an avid angler, I like to fish as often as I can. Any opportunity to get away from work and home and get out on the water is highly valuable. But it isn’t often enough, as life has its ways of interrupting even the best laid fishing plans. A lot of times, I am stuck fishing crowded, nearby waters. My work and family responsibilities often don’t allow me to get away too far, so the popular fishing spots that are close are often my only option. This is not ideal, however. I love backcountry fishing. Getting away from the popular fishing waters and fishing remote locations is what I live for. They often require some sort of travel, whether by plane, boat, car, horseback, or on foot. Backpacking is a great way to explore new fishing waters, especially when the trail follows a river or stream. Utilizing high quality travel fishing rods and other gear is essential for a successful fishing trip. Let’s look at the reasons below.

Why Travel Fishing Rods Are So Important

Whenever I am able to plan an extended fishing trip, I like to make it a trip that goes as far away from work and civilization as possible. If that means taking a float plane to the far reaches of Canada or Alaska, or flying down to Chile or even as far as New Zealand, then that is what I am doing. Remote fishing is the best fishing possible. But you need to plan and prepare for such trips.

Travel fishing rods are fishing rods that are portable, compact, and lightweight. There is no reason why you should be lugging a one piece, 8 foot fishing rod on a plane to your fishing destination. There is a better way – going with travel fishing rods and reels.

Types Of Travel Fishing Rods

There are many types of travel fishing rods. There are telescopic travel fishing rods. These rods are one piece, but they collapse down to 10-14 inches from 6 feet or more. They are very compact and portable. A telescopic fishing rod or collapsible fishing rod is ideal for backpacking, as they are lightweight and easily stow-able in a backpack. The best travel fishing rods will be a combination of lightweight, portable, and stow-able, so look for these characteristics in your options. Another type of travel fishing rod is 3 or 4 piece travel fishing rods. Rather than being a telescoping fishing rod, these fishing rods break apart into multiple pieces. Fly fishing rods usually come in this configuration, allowing you to break down a 9 foot fly rod into smaller sections for easy portability. Protecting Your Travel Rods

When traveling far distances to fish, make sure that your fishing rods are protected along the way with the appropriate fishing rod tubes or fishing rod bags. You will definitely want to protect your investment, especially if you are getting on a plane. The best travel rods will pack into a small enough package for you to be able to carry them on your back. Look for good collapsible options or break down options that fit this criteria.

Shopping Tips

When shopping for travel rods and reels, make sure you read plenty of travel rods reviews online, as this will allow you to find the best possible options for the best costs. A lot of telescopic fishing rods are cheap travel rods options, because they just don’t usually cost that much. This is great if you are going into an area that they might get damaged, lost, or stolen. Shimano makes better quality travel rods than most companies, but Shimano travel rods usually cost more money. Make sure you do your homework when shopping for the right travel rod options.

The Bottom Line

Read up on some online travel fishing rods reviews to find the best deals and quality rods. Once you have your travel fishing kit, make sure you protect your investment with a good fishing rod bag or fishing rod tube. You don’t want them breaking on you in transit.

Even though we are all not lucky enough to have world class fishing in our neighborhood, we all have the option of traveling to a great fishing spot. Make sure you have the right gear for your travels, and especially the right travel rod. Good luck and as always, happy fishing!

Telescoping Fishing Rod – Portable Fishing Excellence

Backpacking allows me to get to untouched fishing waters. Casual fisherman like the convenience of drive-up fishing. While these accessible waters are easy to get to and convenient to fish, the fish generally are wary of fisherman. There is really nothing that compares with backcountry fishing. Being able to get away from the casual fisherman and the crowded popular fishing waters while enjoying nature and the outdoors is a wonderful experience. I especially enjoy backpacking into remote mountain streams and lakes to fish for native trout. I love fishing backcountry lakes and streams that are rarely even looked at by people, some of which are un-named.

Planning is very important with any backpacking trip. Because these trips can span multiple days and many miles, it is important to trim as much excess weight as possible. This often means that a lot of fishing gear that normally comes with me on trips get left behind. When backpacking, every ounce adds up and can really cause discomfort and fatigue if the total gets too high. This is where a telescoping fishing rod comes in. Below, we will discuss the advantages of utilizing a telescoping fishing rod for high speed trail fishing.

Characteristics Of A Telescoping Fishing Rod

A telescoping fishing rod and reel combo is a lightweight fishing rod set that that collapses down to 10-14 inches from 6 or more feet. The beauty of a collapsible fishing rod is that it is very compact and can easily fit into a backpack for easy transport while backpacking. A telescoping rod and reel can then easily be deployed and set up for quick fishing when time permits. This makes fishing along the trail easy and ideal.  Below is an image for the Eagle Claw Pack-It telescoping fishing rod, which is an excellent and affordable option. Trail Fishing With A Telescoping Fishing Rod

When I plan a backpacking trip, I like to have a final destination in mind. This destination can be a high mountain lake filled with native trout, or the headwaters of a river. But when I plan my route, I prefer to hike along a river or stream. This means that as I hike, I can explore new fishing waters. With a telescoping fishing rod combo, I can quickly rig up and cast to feeding fish that I happen to see while hiking. It is great because I can skip all the water that might not yield any fish and just spend a few minutes on each hole as I go. If I don’t catch a fish quickly, then I can move on to the next hole without having to do too much re-packing.

Finding The Best Telescopic Fishing Rod Prices

Do an Internet search to find the best telescopic fishing rod prices. My choice for a telescopic fishing rod kit is the Eagle Claw Pack-It Spin Combo Telescopic Rod (1 Piece), in the image above. It is affordable ($55), very portable and lightweight, and durable. I have landed up to 5 pound trout on it. The reel is a cheap spinning reel, lightweight and small. Before I purchased it, I looked for telescopic fishing rod reviews online. This helped me make my decision.

The Bottom Line

I love to get into the backcountry for camping and fishing.  There is nothing like fresh fish after a long day of hiking. My telescopic fishing rod and reel allow me to catch what I need to eat as well as fish for fun. If you are looking to get into backcountry fishing, I recommend telescopic fishing rods. They are portable, lightweight, and durable enough to land the big one! Finding the right telescoping fishing rod kit will require a little research. Read some online telescoping fishing rod reviews to give you an idea on which one to go with. Once you have your telescopic fishing rod kit, you are ready for some serious backcountry fishing. Happy Fishing!

Collapsible Fishing Rod – Portable Fishing Gear

Backcountry fishing is a great way to get away from casual fisherman and crowded waters. It also allows you to fish sometimes untouched waters where fish don’t know what a lure is and haven’t seen one in their lives. There is something to be said of the allure of discovering new rivers, streams and lakes to fish, even if you aren’t the first to fish them. One of the best ways to find new fishing holes is to explore on foot. Sure, a float plane will be able to fly you into some of the most remote waters for some Alaska fishing, but being able to explore on foot means that you will be able to fish along the way to a far away lake or stream. Following a meandering river allows you the opportunity to spot fish, locating feeding fish in promising holes. The right gear is essential to make these explorations successful. This is where a good collapsible fishing rod comes in, and we will discuss the advantages of using these rod systems below.

Portability Is Essential For The Trail

If you are fishing off the trail, it is important that you have your gear in an easy to access compartment in your backpack. You may even want to hike while holding your fishing rod in your hand, as this will allow you to quickly present your lure or fly to any feeding fish. It is important to consider what type of backpacking trip you are on. If you are just out for the day, fishing your favorite stream or river, you won’t be carrying a huge backpack with you. If you are on a multi-day trip, you have many more important preparations to make. You will be carrying everything you need for survival on your back, so carrying as little extra gear is very important. In both of these scenarios, lugging large fishing kits and a lot of tackle will not be the best case scenario. You will want to go as lightweight as possible.

Collapsible Fishing Rod Options

Eagle Claw Pack-It Spin Combo Telescopic Rod (1 Piece)

Bringing along a collapsible fishing rod as opposed to a heavier, full length rod will cut down on weight, bulk, and will speed up the process of getting your lure out to feeding fish. A collapsible fishing rod and reel combo that is ready to go will be a great asset as you explore new fishing waters. The above image for the Eagle Claw Pack-It Spin Combo telescopic fishing rod is an affordable option that will get the job done (if you are interested, click on the image to purchase from Amazon).

A collapsible fishing rod and reel, or telescoping fishing rod kit has the ability to go from a collapsed, approximately 12 inch package to a fully extended fishing rod measuring 6 feet or more. It can be stowed easily in a pack (within a fishing rod bag) and can be quickly deployed for use on the river.

An alternative to this would be a fly fishing combo, which can be taken down into multiple pieces. The collapsible rod will still be faster and easier to use than this option, and will fit into a smaller package.

The Bottom Line

Read a collapsible fishing rod review or two online to find the best collapsible fishing rod for your situation. When you find the right rod for your specific application, get a good collapsible fishing rod case to protect it while it is stowed within your backpack.

Backcountry fishing offers many opportunities for exploration and finding new waters. If you use a good collapsible fishing rod, you will be able to quickly fish holes along the path. As always, happy fishing!
